My Fishing Journey
I’ve been fishing since the early 1970s, when I first picked up a rod for some casual pleasure fishing. Back then, there was no internet, no YouTube tutorials—just fishing magazines, books, and trial and error. Without a mentor in my family, I had to figure it all out myself, and like many beginners, I had plenty of blank days!
Over time, I joined a fishing club, learnt from more experienced anglers, and developed a deep love for the sport. But life has a way of pulling you in different directions, and between work, music, and family, fishing took a backseat for a while. Despite that, I always kept my gear, knowing that one day I’d return to the water.
Returning to the Sport
Now retired, I have the time and passion to fully embrace fishing again—this time with a new challenge: match fishing. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the confidence to pursue. Now, I’m taking the leap, testing my skills in a competitive setting, and sharing my experiences along the way.
I’ve learnt a lot from watching top anglers like Jamie Hughes, Andy May, Des Shipp, Andy ‘Bagger’ Bennett, and Andy Power. Their expertise has been a huge inspiration, and I’m keen to put their techniques into practice while developing my own style.
Why This Website?
Beyond the Bank is a place where I document my fishing journey, sharing practical advice, match fishing insights, and the highs and lows of getting back into competitive angling. My goal is to make match fishing more approachable for those who might be hesitant to try it—because if I can do it, so can you!
I keep things simple, practical, and jargon-free where possible, because I know that not everyone enjoys wading through overly technical details. That said, when technical knowledge is useful, I’ll explain it in a way that makes sense.
